A mother shared a heartbreaking picture of her daughter comforting her poor little brother. |
In August 2018, Beckett Burge was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a type of blood cancer that starts in young white blood cells of the bone marrow. He was only two years old at the time of his devastating diagnosis.
Since then, Beckett has had to endure long periods of hospitalization. undergoing chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and platelet transfusions. Through all this, the love and support shown to her by her older sister Aubrey have been truly determinant for life.
Although only 14 months older, the young Aubrey proved to be a mature and caring older sister. According to mother Kaitlin Burge, 28, Aubrey has developed an "incredible bond" with her brother, whom she describes as her "best friend".
Kaitlin, from Princeton, Texas said Aubrey would rather stay inside and watch his younger brother than play with his friends.
In January, Kaitlin took a touching picture of Aubrey taking care of Beckett as he leans over the toilet to be sick. We can see the nice girl rubbing her back and reassuring herself.
After taking the picture, Aubrey went to wash his hands before wearing his brother on the couch. She then asked her parents if she could help clean the bathroom.
Kaitlin has decided to share her powerful image with the world to illustrate the importance of strong family ties in these difficult times.
Recalling the moment the photo was taken, the mother of three said:
She did not know what was going on, but she knew from experience that when she was sick, we would rub her and help her through.
She just gained experience and took over. She rubbed her back and told her that everything would be fine, clean her face and wash her hands.
Right after that, she also took him back to the living room and put him on the couch. She asked me if she could also clean the bathroom, but I told her to sit down because it was not her job.
She is responsible for helping and ensuring that everything that comes in contact with him is clean. She is another pair of eyes.
When I see them together, it makes me happy, and at the same time, it makes me sad. They have an incredible connection. To date, they are closer; she always takes care of him.
A child of four or five should play outside with his friends. She loves gymnastics and we had to put an end to it because of the financial burden, her situation has become too expensive.
She should do gymnastics, run around the neighborhood with the kids, play in the playground and swim in the pool - but here she takes care of her brother.
They are very close - they have always played together. He would play dolls with her and she would play superheroes with him. We encourage her to go out and do things, but she prefers to have eyes on him.
After spending more than a month in the hospital, Beckett returned home with his family at the age of five.
The modified appearance of Beckett caused Aubrey to worry about his little brother, who was once full of energy, while the "smart girl" asked her parents a variety of difficult questions.
Kaitlin said:
She watched a dozen doctors put a mask on her face, sting and pricking her with needles, administering a dozen medications while he lay there helplessly.
She did not know what was going on, she only knew that something was wrong with her brother, her best friend.
We explain to him that he really got sick, that's what happened, it's nothing that he ate or did, nothing that she did, it can not be stopped and it will not happen to him. We explained everything to him and involved our social worker.
We were very open with her, so any questions she could ask her, we explain with Beckett in the room as well. He will tell people "I have cancer," he knows what he has. We make sure she supports and knows that does not make it different.
Beckett, who has four, is expected to undergo another two years of chemotherapy, and Aubrey will remain the most thoughtful and best friend a boy can ask.
