Two glasses of dietary drinks every day can increase the risk of premature death



A World Health Organization study has shown that two glasses of dietary drink a day increase the risk of premature death.

The global study of more than 450,000 adults in 10 countries - including the UK - found that daily consumption of all types of soft drinks was associated with a higher risk of dying young.

But the rates for those who drink artificially sweetened beverages are significantly higher than those consuming full sugar versions.

Scientists at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon (WHO) said it would be "prudent" to remove all non-alcoholic beverages and to have water instead.

And they said that taxing sweetened beverages - as is the case in the UK - could stimulate the consumption of dietary drinks for which the "long-term consequences" on health are unknown.

Experts from the European Society of Cardiology in Paris said people should "eliminate" soft drinks from their diet.

The research, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine is the largest study on the links between soft drink consumption and mortality.

Earlier, more modest studies have suggested a link, but have not found such dramatic differences.

The new research found that those who consumed at least two 250-mL glasses of dietary drink a day had an increased risk of death of 26 percent over the next 16 years.

And deaths from cardiovascular disease increased by 52%.

For those who drank at least two soft drinks a day, the risk of death during the same period was increased by 8%.

Dr. Neil Murphy, head of the study, said, "The most striking observation of our study is that we found positive associations between sweetened soft drinks and soft drinks with a risk of death. from all causes. "

He said the exact reason was "uncertain," but he pointed to earlier studies suggesting that artificial sweeteners contained in diet drinks "could induce glucose intolerance" and trigger high levels of insulin in the blood.

"Further studies are now needed to examine the long-term health consequences of some artificial sweeteners commonly used in non-alcoholic beverages, such as aspartame and acesulfame potassium," he said.

Similar studies in the past have been criticized because experts have said that people who drink dietary products are more likely to be unhealthy at first.

But the new study found that the link between diet drinks and mortality rates persisted among those with a healthy weight.

The study also raised concerns about policies that push people from sugary drinks to diet drinks.

"Artificially sweetened soft drinks have little or no calories; however, their long-term physiological and health implications are largely unknown. '

Professor Mitchell Elkind, Stroke Specialist, President-Elect of the American Heart Association in Paris, said, "This study is important. It is a very large study and includes many countries.

"The message to remember is that you need to drink water - avoid sugary drinks, of course, and be careful with artificially sweetened drinks.

"Water is the safest thing. Tea and coffee are good. But minimize or completely eliminate processed beverages.
